A section of the Lagos Airport Hotel on Obafemi Awolowo Way, Ikeja, was gutted by fire on Monday, destroying no fewer than three halls, two rooms and other valuables worth millions of naira.
It was learnt that the inferno resulted from a surge in the electrical installations at a section of the banquet hall around 5am before it extended to other parts of the hotel.
The intervention of officials of the Lagos State Fire Service and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining buildings.
Firefighters from the Alausa and Ikeja fire stations was said to have battled the inferno with three trucks of water. The fire was later put out around 6.30am.
It was also learnt that rescue operation ended around 9AM with nobody being injured.
“With the quick response from all emergency agencies, we were able to salvage the situation.
“The fire was serious and property worth millions of naira was destroyed. But no life was lost and nobody was injured,” he added.
The General Manager, LASEMA, Mr. Michael Akindele, urged various organisations to always provide safety measures to avert fire disasters.
Akindele said structures close to the hotel were salvaged, adding that further investigations would be carried out to ascertain its the cause of the fire.
He said, “Investigation carried out by the Emergency Response Team at the scene could not show the real cause of the inferno but a source said power surge from a section of the banquet hall of the hotel.
“Firefighters from the Alausa and Ikeja fire stations were able to prevent the fire from spreading to adjoining structures within the hotel complex.
“Property worth millions of naira was destroyed by the inferno. Three rooms (rooms 270, 271, 272) on the second floor of Harold building, the entire computer section of the banquet hall and Osun Hall were affected. Harold Kitchen was totally destroyed by the inferno.
